MATCH REPORT
Back on Boxing Day Coleshill put in their best performance of the season when they beat Lichfield 2-0 and looked head and shoulders above their newly promoted neighbours. Fast forward and Coleshill lay comfortably in a play off place, with Lichfield Nine points behind as they visited Pack Meadow for the first time at Level 4. The last three games saw Coleshill beat Coventry Sphinx 1-0, a heavy 6-0 defeat to Leamington in the Birmingham Senior Cup, and a disappointing performance in a 2-1 defeat at St Neots. City were on the up as they beat Basford 3-0, Belper 4-2, but came up short at championship chasers Carlton in a 4-0 defeat. All was to play for!
Coleshill started well and took an early lead on 13 minutes when Lichfield failed to clear the ball, Marvellous Onabirekhanlen cleverly sent Theo Rowe free to tap in from six yards. The visitors came slowly into the game equalising on the half hour mark through Harvey Smith, who was put through by Jack Edwards and calmly slotted the ball past the advancing Cameron Belford in the Town goal. Lichfield took the lead just before the break with a fine team goal ending with a cross by Luca Taylor and Callum Griffin toe poked home from six yards out.
Coleshill had to react quickly and they deservedly equalised just two minutes into the second half when a long throw in by Ben Usher-Shipway fell to the feet of Mason Rees whose shot took a massive deflection leaving keeper Brendon Bunn stranded. The game continued at pace with both sides looking for a winner. Coleshill looked the more likely to get the winner but Lichfield defended resolutely and with time running out, a Town cross into the box was gathered by keeper Bunn who quickly rolled the ball out to Jack Edwards who went on a 80 yard run up the pitch, crossed to Harry Eden at the far side of the box, who chipped the ball into the danger area where Callum Griffin headed into an empty net for a 97th minute winner. A real hammer blow to Coleshill’s Play Off hopes but a massive boost for Lichfield.
Coleshill travel to Racing Club Warwick next and need a good performance to regain the confidence they had just a couple of weeks ago.
