COLESHILL CHRONICLE WROTE
Coleshill Town, already through first round ties in two other cup competitions, had to be content with a draw and a replay in the Birmingham Junior Cup match at Kings Heath on Saturday. The one about teams from a lower level upsetting a team from a higher level was a strong element in this match, the Amateurs fighting for, and winning, many balls which Town would have won in a Combination match, and being prepared to strike for goal at the earliest opportunity. It was Coleshill who opened the scoring after ten minutes, however, when renewed Town pressure gave Roy Phelps a lob from 22 yards which dipped behind keeper Kenward. Four minutes later, Dave Stanley capitalised on a hard tackling home break to fire a hard shot past David Lawrence for the equaliser. Kings Heath grew in confidence, addaided and abetted by a Coleshill lethargy, and began to command in midfield. Canning, following an early Allcock example, hit the side netting in this period, but the Amateurs were giving Town a testing time and Lawrence did well to tip a last second lob over the bar. Kenward also had to tip a lob over the home bar, from Eddie Hanlon with Newey running in for a strong challenge, but the strong moving Amateurs side were forcing Coleshill into numerous errors. Lawrence making another good save from Stanley. Towards the end of a poor first half, Ray Nabbs hit a hard drive for a save by Kenward, but lifted another try too high for a serious consideration. A half time pep talk by Manager Foley seemed to put more life into Coleshill for the second half. Nabbs tried one along the ground and Coleshill were putting Kings Heath under pressure. Town appealed for a penalty when Canning was pushed over from behind in the area, but the appeal was disallowed and a goal kick awarded to the Amateurs. Coleshill's ability to be decisive, however, led to Stanley getting his second goal in the 57th minute, from a free kick situation, to put the home side in the lead, but four minutes later Newey broke through down the middle, slipped the ball to Allcock who beat Kenward in a tangle, rounded him and pushed the ball home for the equaliser. In the 66th minute, John Newey latched on to a bad defensive pass by Amateurs and stabbed it home to put Coleshill in the lead. Coleshill began to play again with more control but, over confidence at the back led to Tony Joyce nipping in and scoring again for the home side to level the scores at 3-3, the ball going home at the third attempt. Coleshill tried again, Canning firing over the bar after good work by Brayley and Allcock's cross and Allcock followed up with a fine weaving run which was blocked but Amateurs held out for the last eight minutes and the replay at Pack Meadow. Although the second half was better than the first, it was not a good game to watch. It is to be hoped that both sides play better in the replay.
