Sound Win But Coleshill Lack Punch
A convincing result for Coleshill, but there should have been a lot more goals against a struggling side which conceded nine goals the previous week against Bridgnorth. Town were always in control against Celtic, firmly anchored at the foot of the table, but their play, especially up front, left a lot to be desired. Town were without Oscar Deeming who suffered a thigh injury in a bruising encounter with Mile Oak two days earlier. But with John Bown and Clive Lyons on form Coleshill were assured of midfield supremacy. Quarry Bank included Huston, a 15 year old goalkeeper in their line up and Town kicked off with confidence. Eddie Hanlon was soon in action and his first probing centre showed how brittle Celtic’s defence was. Coleshill took 12 minutes to open their account. A Bown centre was pushed into the path of Allen whose shot was parried by Huston and Hanlon slotted the loose ball home. In a rare Celtic attack, Les owen brought down Richards on the edge of the area, but Smith sent the free kick over the bar. Minutes later John Allen handled but keeper Garnell did not have to make a save as Yardley’s free kick soared high over the bar. Scott Coleman and Hanlon were working well on the left flank and it was from one of their crosses that Coleshill scored their second. Coleman centred and Bobby Whillock took a simple chance from close in. Les Owen pumped a ball into the box from fully 40 yards, only to see it bounce off the crossbar with Huston a spectator. Coleshill were straight on the attack after the interval and early chances were missed by Whillock and Dunn. The visitors lead was increased when Whillock was on hand to score after Huston had fumbled a long range shot from Allen. Dunn and Hanlon paved the opening for Whillock to hit number four, but the best goal was the one which completed the “nap” hand. Les Owen, who was outstanding, found Coleman with a splendid pass and from a pin-point cross Hanlon nodded into the path of Phil Dunn who made no mistake. This was not a good performance from Coleshill. The number 9 shirt needs a better exponent in the art of goal-getting and the midfield needs a boost from somewhere.
