Lucky Goal Gives Town A Point
This sort of form will never take Coleshill to Midland Combination honours. Against a lowly Westphillians side, they are third from bottom of the league, they set up numerous chances but could not score until the 87th minute. Town’s defence failed to clear an isolated raid and Ironmonger smashed home from the edge of the area. In the next minute it was almost 2-0 as Coleshill stood waiting for France to be given offside. He ran through unchallenged, but shot over the bar. Clive Lyons was by far Coleshill’s best player, and Les Owen also shone in a defence that missed Paul Hannan. In the second half manager Bob McPherson took a gamble. He brought Pete Garnell out of goal and played him as a centre forward, introducing John Capper, signed mid-week from Solihull Amateurs, for his debut in goal, pushed Lyons into midfield and took Peter Quinn off. Twice Hanlon floated good crosses into the box, but John Allen and Whillock both failed to connect. Garnell showed more ideas and method in attack than the others had all afternoon, and at last the forward line began to move with some purpose. But just as it seemed Coleshill were doomed to defeat, they were handed a gift goal. Capper saved them from sacrificing a valuable point when he made a timely dive to rob Peacock and Hanlon had the last word with a lob which struck a post with Walker beaten. A point for Coleshill, but so very nearly an ignominious defeat. The attack never looked like scoring until Garnell was brought in, and apart from the one lapse, the defence looked fairly solid, although Deeming and Curtis gave their team mates several anxious moments.
