Phelps Comes Back But Coleshill Are Shattered By Breakaways
Two break-away goal by an inferior Bournville side wrecked Coleshill and gave their title hopes a blow. Town had virtually all the play and should have won easily, but it was just one of those days when the ball would not go in the net. With Geoff Statham having joined Mile Oak Rovers, Coleshill included in their side Roy Phelps, re-joining the club from Racing Club Warwick, who added more zip to the attack. Town struggled and were soon a goal down. A long ball was swept towards the Coleshill goal. Deeming tried to head it to safety but only succeeded in steering it into the path of Reeves, who made no mistake with a simple chance. Coleshill lost their composure and only some fine tackling by Les Owen kept them in the game as Bournville surged forward. New skipper Johnny Allen, buzzed in midfield, trying to get his attack moving, but a series of rugged tackles kept Town’s raiders at bay. Vince Hunt looked dangerous on the right wing and it was from him that most of Coleshill’s promising moves stemmed. But Bournville detected a weak link at right back where Roger Coxall had an “off-day” and Povey set up several scoring chances for his forwards which went begging. Evans saved well from Phelps and Hanlon as Coleshill came once more into the game, and it was Phelps who came nearest to scoring with a great 20 yarder which the keeper only saw at the last minute. Just before the interval Coleshill had the ball in the net, but the goal was disallowed after consultation between the referee and a linesman. In the second half Town made a better start and Bournville’s defence came under heavy pressure, with Hanlon going close with a fine shot. The Bournville goal led a charmed life and it was completely against the run of play when they increased their lead with something of a freak goal. A hefty clearance kick found Williams who paved a simple opening for the unmarked Thorne to score. With 20 minutes remaining, Martin Curtis came on for Coxall and Oscar Deeming pushed forward to bolster the attack. The move had its effect, for Deeming reduced the arrears with a blistering shot which Evans failed to hold. The closing stages saw Coleshill on constant attack and Bournville defending desperately. Vince Hunt, who had had a most impressive outing, missed a glorious chance to give Town a share of the points when he missed an open goal.
