Les Owen Gets His Marching Orders
Coleshill gave their brightest display this year. After being given the lead by Phil Dunn, they conceded a penalty and had Les Owen sent off for retaliation but still clinched victory with a second goal from Dunn. Vince Hunt was brought in for his second game of the season and he gave a sparkling performance, going close to scoring on several occasions. But the whole team played solidly and injected even stronger hopes of lifting the Midland Combination Second Division title. Oscar Deeming shone in midfield and the first two Coleshill shots both came from him. Then Oldbury perked up and applied pressure to the Town defence, before a good save by Garnell at the feet of Sabin, relieved tension. In the 20th minute Geoff Statham handled in his own area and the referee pointed to the spot, but Willetts’s shot veered on to a post. Heartened by this let-off, Coleshill pushed forward and were rewarded with a goal when Statham found Dunn, who waltzed past Sanders and jabbed home. Oldbury came more into the game as the first half neared an end and Bonas headed a Sabin corner onto the woodwork. After the interval it was still Oldbury attacking and Bonas saw two powerful efforts off target. Town were reduced to 10 men in the 68th minute when Les Owen, who had been fouled and went to retaliate, received his marching orders. Coleshill knuckled down to the task of preserving their lead and went one better when, with five minutes left, Dunn converted a Hanlon corner. All round this was a solid, workman-like performance from Coleshill, who deserved to take both points.
