“Hat-Trick” Hero Phelps Paves Success
Any hopes Mordun Fyfe may have had of repeating a Coleshill Charity Cup victory over Coleshill, they beat Town in last year’s Final, were shattered by Roy Phelps, who scored a “hat-trick” and laid on the other goal for Dave Wheeler. Phelps was played as an out and out striker, although he prefers a midfield role. The change certainly paid dividends, for Coleshill have rarely looked so sharp in front of goal as they did at Nuneaton. Mordun Fife started with plenty of confidence and took the lead after half an hour. Clarke strolled into midfield and with Coleshill defenders backing away, unleashed a shot which keeper Comley had no hope of saving. Town hit back straight away, Coleman ending a fine run with a powerful shot which was well saved by Haxtall. As Coleshill swept forward both Garnell and Phelps saw shots flash past either post, but despite their pressure Town slipped further behind, Comley could not hold a fierce free kick from Clarkson and French, following up, tapped home the rebound as Coleshill stood and watched. Still Coleshill attacked, but they could not find the net. A Masters effort was cleared off the line and Hextall made a fine save from a Phelps header. Town were denied a penalty when Looms appeared to handle in the area, but their claims were waved aside. Eventually, Town did reduce the arrears, Phelps volleying home a low corner from Coleman. Now it was all Coleshill as countless shots rained on Hextall, with Statham and Deeming both missing the target by inches. Coleshill almost paid the penalty for persistent attack, when Fife went close to snatching a goal, Deeming clearing off the line after Olorenshaw had beaten Comley. Phelps put the sides on level terms and completed his “hat-trick” with a well taken goal from a Garnell cross. Owen was replaced by Wheeler and the substitute sealed Fyfe’s fate with a neat goal after Phelps had made a dummy run to draw the defence.
