Six Goals, Four Bookings, As Town Take a Point
A draw was a fair result to this bruising battle which saw four players, two from each side, booked by Referee Mr D.J.Murray. After 10 minutes, Mortimer’s name was taken for a tackle on Coleman, one of several early incidents which set the crowd on their toes. The tension was rife between two fine sides with Geoff Statham giving no quarter to his former clubmates. John Capper, playing in his first full game for Coleshill, finger-tipped a Cure shot round the post for a corner. Then Town jumped ahead when Hanlon and Garnell combined well on the left, Garnell heading home from an acute angle. Mile Oak saw Mortimer miskick when faced with an open goal before they equalised. Tony Cure, easily the best player on view, pulled a neat ball back from the bye-line and Hickey slid in to prod the ball into the net. Rovers were the more dangerous side in the first half, with Free, Williams and Cure prominent. Capper looked suspect under pressure and gave his side many anxious moments. He missed a Hickey free kick and Cure put Rovers ahead. Then he misjudged a Llewellyn centre, and Deeming headed off the line from Freer. Coleshill had a brighter second half and Les Owen crashed in a penalty following “hands” in the area. Mortimer scored a fine goal to restore the visitors lead, but Town’s increased pressure paid off when Garnell netted the best goal of the game, after Allen had nodded on a Hanlon cross. As the game entered the last 10 minutes, Coleshill did all the attacking, but Mile Oak, with Statham and Williams uncompromising in defence, held out for a point. Roy Sanders had his name taken for dissent and keeper Capper was booked for a foul on Sanders. The fourth name to go down was that of Oscar Deeming for a tackle on Cure. Phil Dunn and Les Owen worked hard for Coleshill, who missed the prompting of Clive Lyons. Coleman, Allen and Hannan had “off days” but a point against Mile Oak is always a useful one.
