Brilliant Display From Hanlon Peps Coleshill
Eddie Hanlon gave one of his best ever performances when helping Coleshill Town take a point from current League Leaders Moor Green. But Town could have come away with both points, but for defensive lapses which allowed “Moors” back into the game. Coleshill started well and had the early chances. Les Owen, back in the side after an injury, came closest with a fine shot which was deflected for a corner. Hanlon soon made an impression with a superb run down the flank, riding a couple of tackles and forcing a corner. But Moors centre half was dominant in the air, and the flag kick proved fruitless. Moors hit back with Deakin, their liveliest forward, going close on a couple of occasions, and Pete Garnell had to make a fine save to clear from the right winger. Shortly afterwards Moors crashed a shot against Town’s crossbar as Coleshill’s defence began to look a little unsettled. With two minutes of the first half remaining, Coleshill edged in front when Hanlon picked up a weak defensive clearance, stepped inside a tackle and netted with a splendid shot. But the lead was short lived and Moors equalised before the interval after Bown was forced to handle just outside the box. The kick was floated over Coleshill’s defence and Deakin ran on to nod in a simple goal. Coleshill started the second half still smarting from Moors quick reply. Peter Quinn slipped past the defence and put over a fine cross which Les Owen headed home. Hanlon almost increased the lead with a long range effort which hit the woodwork. In the 56th minute, it was all square again when Owen failed to clear a corner, Garnell mishandled, and the home centre forward was left with the simplest of chances. Moor Green went ahead for the first time on the hour with another easy goal, the centre forward finding himself unmarked to head in. Cock-a-hoop Moors surged forward again and forced corners in quick succession, before Coleshill regained their composure and it was left to Hanlon to cap a fine game with a great goal. Running wide, he collected a perfect ball from Allen, sidestepped the keeper and tapped it in. A very good performance from Coleshill, marred only by lapses at the back, and an enjoyable contest watched by a large crowd.
