Competent Display To Deserve Victory
Showing only one change from the side which lost a Sutton Charity Cup match to Mile Oak Rovers five days earlier, Coleshill Town gave a competent display to deserve victory. Town were soon on the attack, but Westphalians settled and the match became largely a midfield battle, with goalmouth incidents few and far between. Les Owen shone in Coleshill’s defence, while Scott Coleman was prominent up front. The right wing combination of Harris and Willetts was sometimes effective for “Wests” but a centre from Marrott caused most danger, Town’s keeper John Comley being forced into a fine save from Scott’s header. Roy Phelps had two shots go off target for Town and a free-kick from Geoff Statham also went narrowly wide. Although winning corners on either wing, “Wests” were seldom threatening, but at the other end, an effort by Oscar Deeming was cleared off the line by Thomas. Shortly before the interval, Hannan just failed to create a chance for himself, having beaten two of the home side’s defenders and Marrott, for Westphalians, saw a shot go over the crossbar. On the resumption, Coleshill applied pressure and “Wests” were saved on many occasions by keeper Walker. Even the custodian was helpless to prevent a goal when, in the 57th minute, Owen and Coleman combined for Phelps to head the ball towards the net. Walker made a fine save but Phil Dunn scored from the rebound. “Wests” fought hard, Marrott missed a great chance of equalising. But Coleshill’s more methodical football paid dividends and the homesters defence was constantly hard worked. Phelps and Pete Garnell were both unlucky not to score for Town, whose dominance was mainly due to fine play from Hannan and Dunn, “Wests” attacks were rare. At 78 minutes, Clive Lyons was forced to leave the field with badly blistered feet, having worked tirelessly for Coleshill. He was replaced by Mick Hanlon. Two minutes later, Town put the result beyond doubt. Following a right wing corner by Hannan, the ball ran loose to Garnell, who hammered a shot into the back of the net. Garnell, a goalkeeper turned striker, has now scored Five times in Six matches.
