Phelps Hits Winner As Town Play Well
Boldmere goalkeeper, Warhurst, was the only man who came between Coleshill Town and a big win in their Midland Combination Second Division game on Saturday. A series of fine saves prevented Coleshill from building up a commanding lead, and it was a penalty shot by Roy Phelps that gave the Town the points. With Rawlings, Statham and Curtis unable to play, Coleshill were forced to make a last minute change when John Comley was called upon to deputise for regular keeper Peter Garnell, who found himself wearing the number eleven shirt. Garnell gave a sparkling display and for my money shared the Man Of The Match award with Tony Seddon, who came back to form in his old style to really block the entrance to Town's goal and thus allow Comley an almost trouble free afternoon. Coleshill opened well and their first corner after 7 minutes play almost proved a winner, Sanders drove over a ball wide of the home goal where Garnell slammed in a terrific shot on the turn that saw Warhurst push away off the bar for another corner that proved fruitless. Boldmere forced their first corner after 11 minutes but Wallace's cross was headed wide of the visitors goal by Whitehouse. Coleshill were looking the stronger outfit and Phelps moving well in the middle, with fine support from Bridgewater and Garnell, forced his way through to drive a hard ground shot that saw Warhurst save with cool confidence and assurance. Coleshill got the ball past Warhurst in the 20th minute but Phelps saw the shot waved aside for a handling offence. Coleshill were still carrying the game into the Boldmere half and Bridgwater, running clear on the left, was brought down heavily by full back Lloyd but the free kick was cleared. Boldmere's best chance so far arrived in the 28th minute when centre forward Stanton was left with Comley at his mercy but he shot wide. Bridgewater, a tireless worker up front for Coleshill, weaved his wat through and tried his luck with a high rising shot that passed just over the angle of the Boldmere goal. Coleshill finished the first half on top, however, and Warhurst kept his charge with a clean bill of health when saving in style a good drive from Phelps. The game resumed with Phelps showing up well for Coleshill while in reply Whitehouse drove a good shot only inches wide of the visitors goal. Coleshill pushed the home side back and a goal always appeared the obvious result but it was always Warhurst that had the last say, the keeper saving on the line, a header by Deeming. Sanders took charge of another corner kick and the ball came across to Garnell whose perfect header looked a winner all the way, but again the brilliance of Warhurst proved the winner with another masterly save. Coleshill's long push for the lead came in the 73rd minute when Hanlon crashed in a great shot that had Warhurst really beaten but it came back off the post to Bridgewater, who saw Lloyd fist the ball as it sped under the Boldmere bar, Phelps took the penalty and at last Warhurst was beaten. Boldmere replied with a right wing attack which saw Keegan send in a hard cross shot that Comley had no difficulty in saving and the game ended with Garnell coming close with two good efforts, first he saw a cracking drive taken into the arms of Warhurst while another well directed header met the same fate.
