Coleshill Town gave a disappointing performance against Bournville in this Midland Combination Second Division game on Saturday. Coleshill set off looking capable of overhauling the opposition at any set time, but after 15 minutes of almost ceaseless pressure, the Bournville goal remained intact, and from hereon, Coleshill gradually lost faith in themselves and were a trifle lucky to salvage a point. Phelps's was Town's schemer-in-chief during this bright opening spell, and it was his defence splitting pass that gave Davis a good chance but he shot just wide. Another good effort by Phelps left Stokes unmarked on the right to slam in a hard ground shot that was well taken care off by the ever alert keeper Avery. Bounville's attack, up to this point, had been almost non-existant, their best effort being provided by a free kick that was blazed over the top by Cutter. It was right against the run of play when Bournville stole the lead in the 40th minute, a weak moment by Lyons and Midgley allowed Deakin to career upfield and cut inside to bang in a close range shot that was well saved by Garnell. He, however, failed to keep possession and the ball rebounded to Deakin who promply fired it into the vacant net. As in the first half Coleshill resumed with plenty of determination and Deeming lifted an inviting ball through to Sanders who had cruel luck with a "lob-shot" that passed only inches wide of the visitors goal. Coleshill, fighting hard to re-instate themselves, saw a cracking drive from Halon strike the side netting and it was Hanlon again who was prevented from scoring by the "man-on-the-spot Avery. Corner followed corner for Coleshill, who could do nother right and this was made crystal clear when Davis's fine shot moved away to safety off the woodwork. Another Hanlon inswinger met the head of Phelps, who saw the ball flash inches the wrong side of the goal, but with only eight minutes remaining, a ray of hope settled on Coleshill when awarded a penalty, the ball was handled rather unluckily by Cutler, and although the gallent Avery got a touch, Phelps shot beat him. Coleshill made a bold bid to secure a late victory but in fact it was Bournville who nearly did just that, Deakin broke clean through but Garnell made a fine save and thus allowed Coleshill to capture a point.
