COLESHILL CHRONICLE WROTE
Coleshill Hit Form - Take Home The Cup

Coleshill Town, who have only gained three points from their first three Midland Combination Second Division games, hit winning form on Tuesday night when they beat Alcester Town in the Final of the Inviation Cup. The return of tall defender Tony Seddon helped to bolster up the rearguard, where Geoff Statham and company always had the measure of Alcester's attack. Free kicks came Coleshill's way within minutes and Statham caused anxiety in the Alcester goalmouth when his high free kick was swept away for a fruitless corner. Alcester slowly came more into the game and Garnell saved well a strong shot from centre forward Danks but in the 18th minute Coleshill found themselves a goal down. Alcester's sharp-shooter Reg Wood crashed a fine 20 yard shot at the visitors goal where Garnell made a brilliant save but he could only push the ball loose and Wood hammered the ball well and truly into the net. Within four minutes however Coleshill were on level terms when Statham swept a high shot into the Alcester goal mouth which defender Whitcombe handled. Roy Phelps hammered in the penalty. This success spurred Coleshill on and the Alcester goal had a narrow escape when Hanlon broke clear and saw his cross-shot footed away for a corner by Chesterley. Alcester made strenuous efforts to gain a half time lead and Wood came on to the scene with a powerfully driven shot that Garnell, in fine form, turned round the post and minutes later saved in smart style a good effort by Roger Hughes. It was Coleshill that made the last burst when Hanlon out-paced the opossition to square the ball across goal for Chatterley to sweep away danger from the feet of Malcolm Stokes. Alcester were guilty of some hefty tackling and in the process both Pete Davis and Jeffs were booked as Coleshill kept up the pressure that ended with Sanders missing from close range. Coleshill were approaching the Alcester goal at regular intervals and their finishing left much to be desired until the 70th minute when they gained the lead. Sanders flighted a perfect right wing corner and Phelps, towering above all and sundry headed a perfect goal with Chatterley well beaten. Alcester hit straight back with a swift attack that saw Davis get in a smart header that Garnell saw all the way but straight away it was Coleshill's Davis who missed a sitter soon after with only the keeper to beat he shot wide. Coleshill were now showing real championship form and their first success of the season was cemented firm ten minutes from the end when Colin Davis made amends for his previous miss when he headed home a Stokes corner kick.
