Coleshill Struggle For A Point

Coleshill dominated their Midland Combination Division One match against Walsall Wood, but found themselves a goal down and struggling to take even a point. They made all the running but could not turn the chances they created into goals through poor finishing and good goal-keeping. Walsall took the lead with a penalty mid-way through the second half and Starkey equalised five minutes later. The game ended as it had begun with Coleshill attacking but unable to score again to take both points and climb back towards the top of the table.

Coleshill On The Attack

Coleshill manager David Kite decided to put more emphasis on attack last Saturday and the move so nearly paid off. That they only managed a draw was due to sloppy finishing, good goalkeeping by Walsall's Hollins and some curious decisions by referee Thompson. This was undoubtedly Coleshill's best performance at Pack Meadow this season. With Conway and Dawkins playing wide on the flanks the home attack always looks balanced. Dominating the first 45 minutes Coleshill ripped the Walsall defence apart, scoring chances falling to Nardiello and Paul Montague and at half time they should have been leading by at least three clear goals. It was Coleshill setting the pace again at the start of the second half, but on the hour Walsall's Onions was judged to have been fouled by Hartry, a decision that was harsh, especially as the Walsall winger did what is now a popular "dive". From the resulting penalty Hill duly gave Walsall the lead. Five minutes later it was Coleshill's turn to appeal for a penalty as Nardiello was brought down by Blakemore, but on this occasion the referee awarded an indirect free kick. In the 68th minute Coleshill notched the goal they deserved when a fine three man move saw Starkey hit a left foot shot high into the corner of the net. Substitute Casey replaced the injured Hardy in the final minutes and Coleshill pressed hard for the winner, with shots from Starkey, Montague and Allen going close. Maybe it was a point lost, but there were encouraging signs for manager Kite in this performance.
